Function Translator

Excel function names in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch and Polish. Search for a function in any of them, or paste a whole formula and convert it, separators included.

Find a function

Translate a formula

Examples
=VLOOKUP(A2,$F$2:$G$9,2,FALSE)

Parses. Checked by running the English version through our formula engine.

Separators change too: in these 7 languages Excel puts ; between arguments and uses a decimal comma. Text in quotes is never changed.

Separators, TRUE and FALSE, and errors

The function names aren't the only thing that changes. These are the defaults for each country's regional settings.

  • Spanish: Separators shown are Spain's. Mexico and most of Latin America use a comma between arguments and a decimal point, with the same function names.
  • German: Array constants separate columns with a period and rows with a semicolon, for example {1.2.3;4.5.6}. Microsoft's German article on array constants shows English separators, so treat this one as likely rather than confirmed.
  • Portuguese (Brazil): These are the names in Brazilian Portuguese Excel. Portugal's Portuguese Excel uses many of the same names but not all of them.
  • Italian: Microsoft's Italian article on array constants separates columns with \ and rows with a period. Array separators follow your Windows regional settings, so check yours if an array constant is rejected.
Error values. #SPILL! and #CALC! are left out until we can confirm their names.

Questions

What is VLOOKUP called in other languages?

VLOOKUP is Spanish BUSCARV, German SVERWEIS, French RECHERCHEV, Portuguese (Brazil) PROCV, Italian CERCA.VERT, Dutch VERT.ZOEKEN, Polish WYSZUKAJ.PIONOWO. Its newer replacement XLOOKUP is Spanish BUSCARX, German XVERWEIS, French RECHERCHEX, Portuguese (Brazil) PROCX, Italian CERCA.X, Dutch X.ZOEKEN, Polish X.WYSZUKAJ.

Why do I get #NAME? when I copy a formula from an English tutorial?

Excel only recognizes function names in the language it runs in, so SUMIF typed into a German Excel is an unknown name. Type the local name (SUMMEWENN in German), or paste the formula into the translator above. Change the commas between arguments to semicolons as well.

Why does Excel use semicolons instead of commas in my language?

Where the decimal separator is a comma, as in most of Europe and Brazil, a comma can't also separate arguments, so Excel uses a semicolon: =ROUND(A1,2) becomes =ARRONDI(A1;2) in French. The separators follow your Windows or Mac regional settings, not the language of Excel itself.

If I send a workbook to someone whose Excel is in another language, do the formulas break?

No. Excel saves formulas with the English names and shows them in each person's language when the file is opened. Only formulas you type, or copy as text, need translating.

Does Google Sheets translate function names too?

Google Sheets can show translated function names too, depending on your language settings, and it uses the separators of the spreadsheet's locale (File → Settings). Its translated names usually match Excel's, but not always.

How were these names checked?

Each name comes from the Excel Function Translator data, which was taken from Excel's own localized resources, and was checked against the syntax and examples in Microsoft's support article for that function in that language. Functions added since Excel 2019 come from Microsoft's localized articles, with a second source where we could find one. 86 of the 1143 names rest on one source and are marked †. Where we couldn't confirm a name, the table shows a dash rather than a guess.
