ISEVEN function
ISEVEN returns TRUE when a number is even. It answers practical either-or questions: which side of the street a house is on, which shift an employee works, or which rows to shade. Decimals are dropped before the test, so 4.7 counts as 4.

Examples
Each result below is calculated from the sample sheet by our formula engine, the same one that grades the practice.
| Cell | Formula | Result | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| D2 | =IF(ISEVEN(A2),"North side","South side") | North side | 214 is even, so it's on the north side |
| E2 | =SUMPRODUCT(--(MOD(A2:A6,2)=0)) | 3 | ISEVEN takes one value at a time, so count a range with MOD |
| F2 | =ISEVEN(4.7) | TRUE | TRUE: the decimal is dropped, leaving 4 |

C2, return Day if the employee ID in A2 is even, otherwise Night. Fill down to C7.Common mistakes
| What you see | Why, and how to fix it |
|---|---|
| #VALUE! | The cell holds text, such as "Unit 4". Pull the number out first, or test only cells where ISNUMBER is TRUE. |
| Blank cells count as even | An empty cell is treated as 0, and 0 is even. Check ISBLANK first if blanks are possible. |
| #VALUE! for a whole range | ISEVEN is built for single values. To count even numbers in a range, use =SUMPRODUCT(--(MOD(A2:A6,2)=0)). |
Tips
- Shade every other row with a conditional formatting rule of =ISEVEN(ROW()).
Questions
How do I check if a number is even in Excel?
=ISEVEN(A2) returns TRUE for even numbers. =MOD(A2,2)=0 is the same test for whole numbers.
How do I shade every other row?
Use conditional formatting with the formula =ISEVEN(ROW()). It keeps working when you sort or insert rows.
