Google Sheets

Google Sheets practice, graded in a live sheet

Learn the formulas by writing them: FILTER, QUERY, ARRAYFORMULA, XLOOKUP, SPLIT and the REGEX functions, in a sheet that follows Google Sheets rules and checks your answer the moment you press Check.

Try one: FILTER with two conditions

Sheets mode
In F2, use FILTER to list every Open order worth more than 1000. Return all four columns of A2:D9, and give each condition its own argument.

The course

Each lesson starts with a short walkthrough on sample data, then gives you a fresh sheet to solve. Your answers are re-checked on changed data, so a formula has to really work.

Where Google Sheets formulas differ from Excel

Most formulas are the same in both. These are the ones that trip people up when they switch, and each links to practice.

TaskGoogle SheetsExcel
Filtering rowsFILTER(range, condition1, condition2, …). No match gives #N/A.FILTER(array, include, [if_empty]). No match gives #CALC!.
SortingSORT(range, column, TRUE or FALSE, …)SORT(array, [sort_index], [1 or -1], [by_col])
Array mathWrap the formula in ARRAYFORMULA (or press Ctrl+Shift+Enter).Microsoft 365 spills array results on its own.
Summarizing with SQLQUERY(data, "select … where … group by …")No QUERY. FILTER, GROUPBY or a PivotTable do parts of it.
Regular expressionsREGEXMATCH, REGEXEXTRACT, REGEXREPLACEMicrosoft 365 has REGEXTEST, REGEXEXTRACT and REGEXREPLACE, with different arguments.
Splitting textSPLIT(text, delimiter)TEXTSPLIT in Microsoft 365, or Text to Columns.
Ranges that growA2:A runs to the bottom of the sheet.Use A:A, a table, or a fixed range like A2:A1000.
Joining ranges{A2:A10, C2:C10} puts ranges side by side; a semicolon stacks them.Braces hold constants only; use HSTACK and VSTACK.
Counting unique valuesCOUNTUNIQUE(range)COUNTA(UNIQUE(range))

Guides and practice

  • The QUERY function

Select, where, group by, order by and label, every example calculated live, plus three graded exercises.

  • Highlight duplicates

The conditional formatting formula, only-the-repeats, two columns, and removing duplicate rows.

  • Interview questions

18 questions with model answers. The formula ones come with a graded task.

  • Free skills test

Six timed tasks, your level, and what to practice next. No signup.

  • Sheets functions

ARRAYFORMULA, FILTER, SORT, SPLIT, JOIN, COUNTUNIQUE and more, each with live examples.

  • Functions shared with Excel

XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, IFERROR, UNIQUE and over a hundred more work the same way in both.

Questions

Is this the real Google Sheets?

No. It's our own spreadsheet that runs in your browser. For the formulas taught here it follows Google Sheets rules: FILTER and SORT take Sheets arguments, QUERY, ARRAYFORMULA, SPLIT and the REGEX functions work, and empty results stay blank. That's what lets us grade your answer instantly.

Do I need a Google account?

No. Everything runs on this site. Your progress is saved in your browser, or to your account here if you sign in.

What's free?

The first 4 lessons, the skills test, the function pages, the QUERY guide and the interview questions. Pro unlocks the power tools track and the Excel course.

Do you cover pivot tables, charts and conditional formatting?

Not in the live grid yet. The interview questions explain how they work in Sheets, and the duplicates guide covers the conditional formatting formulas you can practice here.

I already know Excel. Where should I start?

Read the differences table above, then go to FILTER and SORT, ARRAYFORMULA and QUERY. Those are where Sheets works differently.
