Spreadsheet Practice

Practice formulas on your own data

Paste a table from your spreadsheet and get graded exercises built from your own columns: totals, SUMIFS, XLOOKUP, FILTER and more, in Excel or Google Sheets mode. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

  1. Paste or upload a table with a header row, or try a sample.
  2. Check the columns. Numbers, dates, categories and IDs are detected for you.
  3. Solve 10 to 12 exercises, each checked on your data and on changed copies of it.
or try a sample:

Your data never leaves this browser. The table is read and checked on this device; nothing is uploaded or sent anywhere.

Why practice on your own data

Exercises about made-up fruit sales teach the function. Your own table teaches the job. When the columns are the ones you work with every week, the formula you just wrote is the formula you need on Monday, and it's easier to remember because you know what the answer should look like.

It also shows you what your data can answer. A table of orders can give totals by region, the biggest customer, the month of each order and a filtered list for one rep. Seeing those questions answered with formulas, on your columns, makes the next report quicker to build.

What it builds

Each set mixes skills and runs from easy to hard. Which exercises you get depends on your columns. New set from this table picks different columns and values.

  • Totals and averages. SUM and AVERAGE over a column of numbers
  • Counting a category. COUNTIF with the category in a cell, not typed into the formula
  • Conditional totals. SUMIFS, AVERAGEIFS and MAXIFS by category, and SUMIFS between two dates
  • Two conditions. COUNTIFS on two columns, or a category plus a threshold like ">="&E2
  • Lookups. XLOOKUP and INDEX/MATCH by ID or name, and the row with the highest value
  • Locked references. Each row's share of the total, filled down with $ signs
  • Ranking. RANK.EQ down a column
  • Dates and text. Days between two dates, the month as text, the prefix of an ID
  • Dynamic arrays. FILTER the rows for a category, UNIQUE values, SORT largest first

How your answers are checked

Every exercise is built and tested before you see it. The reference answer has to pass, and a typed-in number has to fail. When you press Check, your formula runs on your table, then on three changed copies, with numbers nudged up and down, dates moved and the input cells swapped for other values. Passing means the formula works, not just that it matched once.

The checks use the same formula engine as the lessons and the skills test. It follows Excel and Google Sheets closely, including dynamic arrays that spill.

Your data stays on your device

The page reads the table in your browser and never sends it anywhere: not to our server, not to an AI service, not to analytics. Close the tab and it's gone, unless you tick Keep this table on this device, which saves it in this browser only. For a sensitive file, paste just the columns you want to practice on.

Questions

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The table is read, turned into exercises and checked by a formula engine that runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to our server or anyone else. If you tick "Keep this table on this device", it is saved in this browser's local storage, and unticking it deletes it.

What kind of table works best?

A list with a header row and at least four rows: something like orders, employees, inventory or a budget. A column of numbers and a column of repeated labels (a region, a department, a category) give the widest range of exercises. Dates and IDs add lookups and date exercises.

How do I copy a table from Excel or Google Sheets?

Select the cells including the header row, copy them (Ctrl+C or ⌘C), click in the box and paste. Spreadsheets copy cells as tab-separated text, which the tool reads directly. CSV files and CSV text work too.

Why do some answers refer to an input cell instead of the value?

Because that is how formulas are written at work: the condition sits in a cell so you can change it. The grader also changes those inputs and your numbers when it re-checks your answer, so a typed-in result won't pass. Only a working formula does.

What if a column is typed wrong?

Use the dropdown above each column in the preview. Set it to Number, Date, Category, ID or name, Text, or Ignore, and the exercises are rebuilt from your choice.

Excel or Google Sheets?

Pick either before you build. Google Sheets mode grades with Google Sheets behavior and uses functions it has (LEFT and FIND instead of TEXTBEFORE, for example). FILTER, UNIQUE, SORT and XLOOKUP need Excel 2021 or Microsoft 365.

How big can the table be?

Up to 500 rows are read. Each exercise puts the first 50 rows on its sheet so the grid stays easy to work with.
