How to round down to a multiple in Excel (FLOOR)

Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)

=FLOOR(B2,C2)

Use FLOOR with the step: =FLOOR(B2,C2) rounds 1,375 down to 1,320 when pallets hold 60.

The formula is already in D2, filled down to D6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.

How it works

FLOOR rounds down to the last multiple of its second argument that fits: 22 full pallets of 60 is 1,320, and the other 55 bags don't make a pallet. Values that are already multiples, like 5,000, stay the same.

=FLOOR(B2,C2)

Result1320

  1. B21,375

    The value in B2.

  2. C260

    The value in C2.

  3. FLOOR(B2,C2)1320

    FLOOR: Rounds down to a multiple.

    • numberB21,375
    • significanceC260

In Google Sheets

The same formula works in Google Sheets: =FLOOR(B2,C2). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.

Other ways to do it

Each one was run on the same example sheet.

FormulaResultWhen to use it
=FLOOR.MATH(B2,C2)1,320, 2,000, 480…The newer function, with a mode argument for negative numbers.
=B2-MOD(B2,C2)1,320, 2,000, 480…Subtract the remainder; the same result for positive numbers in any app.

Common mistakes

  • For negative numbers, FLOOR rounds away from zero (-7 becomes -10 with a step of 5). Check what your report needs.
  • FLOOR returns #DIV/0! or 0 when the step is 0 or blank. Make sure every row has a step.

Try it yourself

Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.

Round down to a multiple in Excel (FLOOR)

In D2, round the stock down to a whole number of pallets (a multiple of C2), then fill down to D6.

Questions

How many full pallets is that?

Use =INT(B2/C2), or =ROUNDDOWN(B2/C2,0).

How do I round down to the nearest 100?

Use =FLOOR(B2,100) or =ROUNDDOWN(B2,-2).
