How to get the decimal part of a number in Excel
Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)
=MOD(A2,1)Use MOD with 1: =MOD(A2,1) returns what is after the decimal point, so 7.75 gives 0.75.

The formula is already in B2, filled down to B6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.
How it works
MOD returns the remainder of a division, and the remainder of dividing by 1 is the fraction after the whole number. 7.75 divided by 1 leaves 0.75; a whole number like 4 leaves 0. Multiply by 60 to turn a fraction of an hour into minutes.
=MOD(A2,1)Result0.75
A27.75The value in A2.
MOD(A2,1)0.75MOD: Remainder after division.- number

In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =MOD(A2,1). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =A2-INT(A2) | 0.75, 0.50, 0.25… | The number minus its whole part; the same for positive numbers. |
| =A2-TRUNC(A2) | 0.75, 0.50, 0.25… | Keeps the minus sign for negative numbers: -2.25 gives -0.25. |
Common mistakes
- For negative numbers MOD is always positive:
=MOD(-2.25,1)gives 0.75. Use=A2-TRUNC(A2)to get -0.25. - Results can carry tiny binary errors, like 0.0999999999999996 for 9.1. Wrap in
ROUND(…,10)before comparing.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
Get the decimal part of a number
B2, return only the decimal part of the hours, then fill down to B6.Questions
How do I turn the decimal part into minutes?
Multiply by 60: =MOD(A2,1)*60 gives 45 for 7.75 hours.
How do I get the whole-number part?
Use =TRUNC(A2), or =INT(A2) for positive numbers.
