How to multiply hours and minutes by an hourly rate in Excel
Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)
=B2*24*C2Convert the time to hours first: =B2*24*C2. Without *24 the pay comes out 24 times too small.

How it works
A time like 7:30 is stored as 0.3125 of a day. Multiplying by 24 turns it into 7.5 hours, and multiplying by the rate gives the pay: 7.5 × $40 = $300.
=B2*24*C2Result300
B27:30The value in B2.
B2*247.5The * operator multiplies.
C2$40The value in C2.
B2*24*C2300The * operator multiplies.
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =B2*24*C2. We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =ROUND(B2*24*C2,2) | $300.00, $446.25, $183.33…Different result | Rounded to the cent. Rounded to cents. |
| =B2*C2 | $12.50, $18.59, $7.64…Different result | The common mistake: it multiplies a fraction of a day by the rate. Pays 7:30 at $12.50 instead of $300. |
Common mistakes
- The pay cell can inherit the time format and show a time. Format it as currency.
- Durations of 24 hours or more must be entered with a [h]:mm format (25:30), or they wrap and lose a day.
