How it works
Times are fractions of a day and a day has 1,440 minutes, so multiplying by 1440 gives minutes: 1:15 is 75 minutes and 3:05 is 185.
=B2*1440Result75
B21:15The value in B2.
B2*144075The * operator multiplies.
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =B2*1440. We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =ROUND(B2*1440,0) | 75, 45, 150…Different result | Whole minutes, which avoids results like 74.9999999. Rounds to whole minutes when the time includes seconds. |
| =B2*24*60 | 75, 45, 150… | Hours times 60; the same result. |
Common mistakes
- The result can show as a time like 0:00 because it inherits the time format. Format the cell as a number.
- If B2 includes a date, take the time part first:
=MOD(B2,1)*1440.
