How it works
A time is a fraction of a day and a day has 24 hours, so multiplying by 24 gives decimal hours: 7:45 is 0.3229 of a day, which is 7.75 hours. Payroll and billing usually need hours in this form.
=B2*24Result7.75
B27:45The value in B2.
B2*247.75The * operator multiplies.
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =B2*24. We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =ROUND(B2*24,2) | 7.75, 8.33, 6.10…Different result | Rounded to two decimals for payroll. 8:20 becomes 8.33. |
| =B2*1440/60 | 7.75, 8.33, 6.10… | Converts to minutes and then to hours; the same result. |
Common mistakes
- The result may inherit the time format and show as 18:00. Format the cell as a number.
- Times stored as text need converting first:
=TIMEVALUE(B2)*24.
