How it works
The system works only if every component works, so the chances multiply: 99.5% × 98% × 97% × 99% × 98.5% ≈ 92.2%. PRODUCT does that for a whole range, like SUM does for addition.
=PRODUCT(B2:B6)Result0.9223427021
B2:B65 rows × 1 col: 99.5%, 98.0%, 97.0%, 99.0%, …A range: 5 cells in one column.
PRODUCT(B2:B6)0.9223427021PRODUCT: Multiplies all the numbers.- number1
B2:B65 rows × 1 col: 99.5%, 98.0%, 97.0%, 99.0%, …
- number1
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =PRODUCT(B2:B6). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns 92.2%.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =B2*B3*B4*B5*B6 | 92.2% | The same multiplication written out; fine for a few cells. |
Common mistakes
- PRODUCT skips blank cells instead of treating them as 0, so a missing value quietly drops out. The * version returns 0 for a blank.
- Text in the range is skipped too. Check that every value is a number.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
