Why is my formula showing as text instead of the result?

Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)

=B2*C2

The cell was formatted as Text, or the formula starts with a space or apostrophe. Set the cell to General and re-enter =B2*C2.

The formula is already in D2, filled down to D6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.

How it works

A formula shows as text when the cell never treats it as a formula: the cell was formatted as Text before you typed it, the entry starts with a space or an apostrophe, or Show Formulas is turned on. Typed into a General cell, starting with =, the same =B2*C2 calculates 15.

=B2*C2

Result15

  1. B212

    The value in B2.

  2. C2$1.25

    The value in C2.

  3. B2*C215

    The * operator multiplies.

In Google Sheets

The same formula works in Google Sheets: =B2*C2. We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.

Other ways to do it

Each one was run on the same example sheet.

FormulaResultWhen to use it
=PRODUCT(B2:C2)$15.00, $37.45, $129.80…The same multiplication written as a function.

Common mistakes

  • Changing the format from Text to General isn't enough by itself. Re-enter the formula: click in the cell and press Enter.
  • A space or apostrophe before the = makes the whole entry text. Delete it.
  • If every formula on the sheet shows as text, Show Formulas is on. Press Ctrl+` (the key left of 1) or turn it off on the Formulas tab.

Try it yourself

Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.

Why is my formula showing as text instead of the result

In D2, enter a formula that multiplies quantity by price, then fill it down to D6.

Questions

How do I fix a whole column of text formulas at once?

Set the column to General, then use Find and Replace (Ctrl+H) to replace = with = in that column, which re-enters every cell.

Why does my formula show 0 instead of the result?

That is a different problem: the formula runs, but it refers to empty cells or to numbers stored as text.
