How it works
A time is a fraction of a day, and dividing it by the distance gives the time per mile, still a fraction of a day. Formatted as mm:ss, it reads as a pace: 27:54 over 3.1 miles is 9:00 per mile.
=C2/B2Result0.00625
C20:27:54The value in C2.
B23.1The value in B2.
C2/B20.00625The / operator divides.
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =C2/B2. We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =C2*1440/B2 | 00:00, 05:48, 05:57…Different result | Pace in decimal minutes per mile, like 9.0. Decimal minutes. |
| =TEXT(C2/B2,"m:ss")&" /mi" | 9:00 /mi, 9:28 /mi, 9:03 /mi…Different result | A label like 9:00 /mi. Text label. |
Common mistakes
- Enter run times with the hours: 0:27:54. Typed as 27:54, the time is read as 27 hours 54 minutes.
- The mm:ss format wraps at 60 minutes, which is fine for paces; use h:mm:ss for the run times.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
