The formula is already in B2, filled down to B6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.
How it works
Inside a formula, a quote mark in text is written as two quotes, and the whole text needs its own quotes around it, so """" is the text made of one quote mark. SUBSTITUTE replaces every one of them with nothing.
=SUBSTITUTE(A2,"""","")Result"Northwind Traders"
A2""Northwind Traders""The value in A2.
SUBSTITUTE(A2,"""","")"Northwind Traders"SUBSTITUTE: Replaces matching text.- text
A2""Northwind Traders"" - old_text
"""" - new_text
""
- text
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =SUBSTITUTE(A2,"""",""). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =SUBSTITUTE(A2,CHAR(34),"") | Northwind Traders, Contoso, Ltd, Fabrikam… | CHAR(34) is the double quote character; easier to read. |
| =IF(AND(LEFT(A2)="""",RIGHT(A2)=""""),MID(A2,2,LEN(A2)-2),A2) | Northwind Traders, Contoso, Ltd, Fabrikam…Different result | Removes only the quotes wrapped around the value, keeping any inside it. "Size ""XL"" shirt" keeps its inner quotes. |
Common mistakes
- Curly quotes (“ ”) from Word or web pages are different characters. Copy one into the formula:
SUBSTITUTE(A2,"“",""). - Removing quotes from values that contain commas can break a CSV export later. Remove them only in the final data.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
