How to calculate pacing to a monthly goal in Excel
Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)
=(C2/B2)/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0)))Compare progress with the share of the month gone: =(C2/B2)/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0))). Above 100% means ahead of pace.

How it works
On March 12, 12 of 31 days have passed: 38.7% of the month. DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0)) gives the number of days in the month. Ana has 42% of her goal, so she is pacing at 42 / 38.7 = 108.5%: on track to beat it. Ben, at 77.5%, would finish short if nothing changes.

In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =(C2/B2)/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0))). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =C2/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0)))/B2 | 108.5%, 77.5%, 100.1%… | Projects the month-end total first (sales ÷ share of month gone), then divides by the goal. Same result. |
Common mistakes
- Calendar days assume sales happen evenly every day. For a business that sells on weekdays only, use
NETWORKDAYSfor the elapsed and total days. - Early in the month the pace swings wildly; a big order on day 2 can show 500%.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
Calculate pacing to a monthly goal
D2, calculate how each rep is pacing: progress toward the goal divided by the share of the month that has passed as of G1, then fill down to D6.Questions
How do I project the month-end total?
Divide sales to date by the share of the month gone: =C2/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0))).
How much does the rep need per remaining day?
=(B2-C2)/(EOMONTH($G$1,0)-$G$1) gives the daily amount needed for the rest of the month.
