How it works
EOMONTH adds the months and always returns the last day of the resulting month, so a schedule of month ends stays on month ends. EDATE keeps the day number instead, which turns February 28 into March 28 and September 30 into October 30.
=EOMONTH(A2,B2)Result3/31/2026 (46112)
A22/28/2026The value in A2.
B21The value in B2.
EOMONTH(A2,B2)3/31/2026 (46112)EOMONTH: Last day of the month, months away.- start_date
A22/28/2026 - months
B21
- start_date
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =EOMONTH(A2,B2). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =EDATE(A2,B2) | 3/28/2026, 6/30/2026, 9/30/2026…Different result | Keeps the day number, so month ends drift. February 28 plus one month is March 28. |
Common mistakes
- A series built with EDATE from a short month gets stuck on the 28th for the rest of the series.
- If the start isn't a month end, EOMONTH still jumps to one: April 15 plus 2 months becomes June 30.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
