How to convert numbers to text in Excel

Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)

=TEXT(A2,"0")

Use =TEXT(A2,"0") for whole numbers, or =A2&"" to keep the number exactly as it is. Both return text.

The formula is already in B2, filled down to B6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.

How it works

Lookups compare types: the number 10442 doesn't match the text "10442" in another system's export. TEXT with the format "0" returns the digits as text, and you can choose another format to control exactly how the text looks.

=TEXT(A2,"0")

Result"10442"

  1. A210442

    The value in A2.

  2. TEXT(A2,"0")"10442"

TEXT: Formats a number or date as text, e.g. "mmm" or "$#,##0".

    • valueA210442
    • format_text"0"

In Google Sheets

The same formula works in Google Sheets: =TEXT(A2,"0"). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.

Other ways to do it

Each one was run on the same example sheet.

FormulaResultWhen to use it
=A2&""10442, 10457, 20871…Joining an empty text converts the number as it is stored, decimals included.
=TEXT(A2,"#,##0")10,442, 10,457, 20,871…Different resultAdds a thousands separator. "10,442" instead of "10442".

Common mistakes

  • Changing the cell format to Text doesn't convert numbers that are already there; it only affects new entries.
  • Numbers with more than 15 digits, like card numbers, have already lost their last digits. Import them as text.
  • The result can't be summed. Keep the original number column for calculations.

Try it yourself

Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.

Convert numbers to text

In B2, convert the product code to text and fill down to B6.

Questions

How do I keep decimals?

Use a format with decimals, =TEXT(A2,"0.00"), or =A2&"".

How do I stop a long number showing as 4.41E+11?

Convert it with all its digits: =TEXT(A2,"0").
