Quick answer

MINUTE returns the minutes part of a time as a number from 0 to 59, so 1:45 PM gives 45.

Syntax
=MINUTE(serial_number)
Most common use
=MINUTE(A2) returns 45 (1:45 PM gives 45)

Use it with HOUR to split timestamps into parts, round times to the quarter hour, or check how many minutes past the hour something happened. It ignores the date part of a date and time.

#VALUE!The cell holds text that isn't a time.
The minutes of a duration over an hourMINUTE only returns 0–59. For total minutes in a duration, use =A2*1440.

Tips

  • =A2*1440 turns a duration into total minutes, which MINUTE can't do.
