Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)
=(B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D2)Count ties as half a win: =(B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D2), with wins in B, losses in C and ties in D.

How it works
Win percentage is wins divided by games played. Ties are commonly counted as half a win and half a loss, so they add 0.5 each to the top and 1 to the bottom. The Hawks have 10 wins and 2 ties in 16 games: 11 / 16 = .688.
Sports tables usually show it as a decimal with three places, which the format does here.
=(B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D2)Result0.6875
B210The value in B2.
D22The value in D2.
0.5*D21The * operator multiplies.
B2+0.5*D211The + operator adds.
C24The value in C2.
B2+C214The + operator adds.
B2+C2+D216The + operator adds.
B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D20.6875The / operator divides.
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =(B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D2). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =B2/(B2+C2) | 0.714, 0.500, 0.800…Different result | Ignores ties completely, as some leagues do. Gives the Hawks .714. |
| =B2/(B2+C2+D2) | 0.625, 0.500, 0.750…Different result | Counts ties as losses. Gives the Hawks .625. |
Common mistakes
- Leagues define ties differently. Check the rule before comparing your numbers with official standings.
- A team with no games divides by zero. Wrap it:
=IFERROR((B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D2),"").
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
Calculate win percentage
E2, calculate the win percentage, counting a tie as half a win, then fill down to E6.Questions
How do I show it as a percentage instead of .688?
Apply the Percent format: 68.8%.
How do I rank teams by win percentage?
Use =RANK.EQ(E2,$E$2:$E$6), or sort the table with =SORT(A2:E6,5,-1).
