How to calculate a weighted score in Excel
Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)
=SUMPRODUCT(B2:E2,$B$8:$E$8)Multiply each score by its weight and add: =SUMPRODUCT(B2:E2,$B$8:$E$8), filled down for each option.

The formula is already in F2, filled down to F6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.
How it works
SUMPRODUCT multiplies the four scores in the row by the four weights and adds the results: for Atlas, 8×35% + 7×30% + 9×20% + 6×15% = 7.6. The weights are locked with $, so every vendor uses the same row 8 while the scores move down.
=SUMPRODUCT(B2:E2,$B$8:$E$8)Result7.6
B2:E21 row × 4 cols: 8, 7, 9, 6A range: 4 cells in one row.
$B$8:$E$81 row × 4 cols: 35%, 30%, 20%, 15%A range: 4 cells in one row.
SUMPRODUCT(B2:E2,$B$8:$E$8)7.6SUMPRODUCT: Multiplies arrays row by row and adds the results.- array1
B2:E21 row × 4 cols: 8, 7, 9, 6 - array2
$B$8:$E$81 row × 4 cols: 35%, 30%, 20%, 15%
- array1
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =SUMPRODUCT(B2:E2,$B$8:$E$8). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =B2*$B$8+C2*$C$8+D2*$D$8+E2*$E$8 | 7.60, 7.40, 7.20… | The same sum written out. Clear for a few criteria, tedious for many. |
Common mistakes
- Without
$on the weights, filling down multiplies by row 9, 10… which are empty, and every score after the first is 0. - If the weights don't add up to 100%, the scores are on a different scale. Divide by
SUM($B$8:$E$8)to turn them into a weighted average.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
Calculate a weighted score
F2, calculate the vendor's weighted score using the weights in row 8, then fill down to F6.Questions
How do I rank the vendors by score?
Use =RANK.EQ(F2,$F$2:$F$6) next to each score.
How do I find the best vendor?
Use =XLOOKUP(MAX(F2:F6),F2:F6,A2:A6).
