How to sum values greater than a number in Excel

Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)

=SUMIF(B2:B9,">"&E1)

Use SUMIF with the operator in quotes joined to the cell that holds the number: =SUMIF(B2:B9,">"&E1).

Result on the example
$8,480 in E2

The formula is already in E2. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.

How it works

SUMIF's condition is text, so ">"&E1 builds the condition ">1000" from the cell. With only two arguments, SUMIF adds the same cells it tests. The 1,000 invoice is left out because it isn't greater than 1,000.

=SUMIF(B2:B9,">"&E1)

Result8480

  1. B2:B98 rows × 1 col: $845, $1,260, $1,000, $2,315, …

A range: 8 cells in one column.

  2. E1$1,000

    The value in E1.

  3. ">"&E1">1000"

The & operator joins as text.

  4. SUMIF(B2:B9,">"&E1)8480

SUMIF: Adds values where the range meets a condition.

    • rangeB2:B98 rows × 1 col: $845, $1,260, $1,000, $2,315, …
    • criteria">"&E1">1000"

In Google Sheets

The same formula works in Google Sheets: =SUMIF(B2:B9,">"&E1). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns $8,480.

Other ways to do it

Each one was run on the same example sheet.

FormulaResultWhen to use it
=SUMPRODUCT((B2:B9>E1)*B2:B9)$8,480Writes the comparison directly, which helps when you need a condition SUMIF can't express.
=SUMIF(B2:B9,">="&E1)$9,480Different resultUse >= when an amount equal to the threshold should count. Includes the 1,000 invoice: 9,480.

Common mistakes

  • =SUMIF(B2:B9,">E1") compares with the text "E1" and returns 0. The cell reference must be outside the quotes.
  • To test one column and add another, give SUMIF the third argument: =SUMIF(C2:C9,">"&E1,B2:B9).

Try it yourself

Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.

Sum values greater than a number

In E2, total the invoices larger than the amount in E1.

Questions

How do I sum values less than a number?

Swap the operator: =SUMIF(B2:B9,"<"&E1).

How do I sum values greater than a number with another condition?

Use SUMIFS: =SUMIFS(B2:B9,B2:B9,">"&E1,A2:A9,"INV-2*").
