How to sum if a cell is blank in Excel
Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)
=SUMIFS(B2:B8,C2:C8,"")Use an empty string as the condition: =SUMIFS(B2:B8,C2:C8,"") adds the rows where column C is empty.

The formula is already in F1. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.
How it works
The condition "" matches empty cells, so SUMIFS adds the amounts on rows where C2:C8 has no date. Those are the unpaid invoices. When a date is entered, the row drops out of the total.
=SUMIFS(B2:B8,C2:C8,"")Result6835
B2:B87 rows × 1 col: $1,250, $480, $2,310, $915, …A range: 7 cells in one column.
C2:C87 rows × 1 col: 4/2/2026, (empty), 4/9/2026, (empty), …A range: 7 cells in one column.
SUMIFS(B2:B8,C2:C8,"")6835SUMIFS: Adds values that meet every condition.- sum_range

In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =SUMIFS(B2:B8,C2:C8,""). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns $6,835.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =SUMIF(C2:C8,"",B2:B8) | $6,835 | The same with SUMIF, which takes the range to add last. |
| =SUMPRODUCT((C2:C8="")*B2:B8) | $6,835 | Also treats cells whose formula returns "" as blank. |
Common mistakes
- A cell with a space is not blank. If an invoice you expect is missing from the total, check the paid date column for stray spaces.
- Using
"="as the condition matches truly empty cells only, not formulas that return "".""matches both.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
