How it works
ROUND's second argument counts decimal places. Positive numbers round to the right of the decimal point; negative numbers round to the left: -1 to tens, -2 to hundreds, -3 to thousands. Halves round away from zero, so 12,450 becomes 12,500.
=ROUND(A2,-2)Result12400

In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =ROUND(A2,-2). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =MROUND(A2,100) | 12,400, 12,500, 8,800… | MROUND rounds to any multiple, like 25 or 0.05, not only powers of ten. |
| =ROUNDUP(A2,-2) | 12,500, 12,500, 8,800…Different result | Always rounds up to the next hundred, for budgets and capacity. Rounds up: 12,449 becomes 12,500. |
Common mistakes
- Formatting a cell to show no decimals only changes how it looks; the full value is still used in sums. ROUND changes the value.
- Rounding each line and then summing can differ from rounding the total. Decide which one your report needs.
