How to multiply a column by the same number in Excel
Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)
=B2*$F$1Put the number in a cell and lock it with $: =B2*$E$1, then fill down.
- Result on the example
- one result per row in
C2, filled down toC6 - Works in
- Every current version
- Google Sheets
- Same formula
See it work
The formula is already in C2, filled down to C6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.
How it works
The dollar signs lock $F$1, so every row multiplies by the same rate while B2 moves to B3, B4 and so on. Keeping the rate in its own cell means you change it once and every price updates.
=B2*$F$1Result42.12
B2€39.00The value in B2.
$F$11.08The value in F1.
B2*$F$142.12The * operator multiplies.
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =B2*$F$1. We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =B2*F$1 | $42.12, $268.92, $484.92… | Locking only the row is enough when you fill down one column. |
Common mistakes
- Without the $, filling down multiplies by F2, F3… which are empty, giving 0.
- Typing the number into the formula (
=B2*1.08) works, but every formula must be edited when the rate changes.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
Multiply a column by the same number
C2, convert the price to US dollars using the rate in F1, then fill down to C6.Questions
