How to calculate percent of subtotal for each group in Excel
Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)
=C2/SUMIF($A$2:$A$10,A2,$C$2:$C$10)Divide each row by its group's total from SUMIF: =C2/SUMIF($A$2:$A$10,A2,$C$2:$C$10).

How it works
SUMIF adds up the sales of every row in the same region as the current row, so each rep is divided by their own region's subtotal. Ana sold 48,000 of East's 100,000: 48%. The shares within each region add up to 100%.
The rows don't need to be sorted by region; SUMIF finds the group wherever its rows are.
=C2/SUMIF($A$2:$A$10,A2,$C$2:$C$10)Result0.48
C2$48,000The value in C2.
$A$2:$A$109 rows × 1 col: "East", "East", "East", "West", …A range: 9 cells in one column.
A2"East"The value in A2.
$C$2:$C$109 rows × 1 col: $48,000, $32,000, $20,000, $45,000, …A range: 9 cells in one column.
SUMIF($A$2:$A$10,A2,$C$2:$C$10)100000SUMIF: Adds values where the range meets a condition.- range
$A$2:$A$109 rows × 1 col: "East", "East", "East", "West", … - criteria
A2"East" - sum_range
$C$2:$C$109 rows × 1 col: $48,000, $32,000, $20,000, $45,000, …
- range
C2/SUMIF($A$2:$A$10,A2,$C$2:$C$10)0.48The / operator divides.
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =C2/SUMIF($A$2:$A$10,A2,$C$2:$C$10). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =C2/SUMPRODUCT(($A$2:$A$10=A2)*$C$2:$C$10) | 48.0%, 32.0%, 20.0%… | The same group total with SUMPRODUCT, which takes extra conditions such as a year. |
Common mistakes
- Without $ on the ranges, they shrink as you fill down and later rows divide by part of their group.
- A region spelled two ways forms two groups. Clean the labels first.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
Calculate percent of subtotal for each group
D2, calculate each rep's sales as a share of their region's total, then fill down to D10.Questions
How do I show each region's share of the grand total too?
Divide the region total by the overall total: =SUMIF($A$2:$A$10,A2,$C$2:$C$10)/SUM($C$2:$C$10).
Can a pivot table show percent of subtotal?
Yes: Show Values As, % of Parent Row Total.
