- Result on the example
- one result per row in
D2, filled down toD6 - Works in
- Every current version
- Google Sheets
- Same formula
See it work
The formula is already in D2, filled down to D6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.
How it works
DATE builds a real date from three numbers: year, month and day. It also rolls over values that are out of range, so DATE(2026,13,1) is January 1, 2027 and DATE(2026,3,0) is February 28.
=DATE(A2,B2,C2)Result3/15/2026 (46096)
A22026The value in A2.
B23The value in B2.
C215The value in C2.
DATE(A2,B2,C2)3/15/2026 (46096)DATE: Builds a date from parts.- year
A22026 - month
B23 - day
C215
- year
In Google Sheets
The same formula works in Google Sheets: =DATE(A2,B2,C2). We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.
Other ways to do it
Each one was run on the same example sheet.
| Formula | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| =DATEVALUE(B2&"/"&C2&"/"&A2) | 3/15/2026, 12/1/2025, 7/4/2026… | Joins the parts into date text and converts it. Depends on US date settings; DATE doesn't. |
Common mistakes
- A two-digit year like 26 becomes 1926 in Excel. Use four-digit years.
- Joining the parts with & gives text, not a date, until you convert it.
Try it yourself
Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.
