The formula is already in C2, filled down to C6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.

How it works

Each department gets its share of the total: 35% of 250,000 is 87,500. The budget cell is locked with $ so every row multiplies the same total. When the shares add up to 100%, the amounts add up to the budget.

=$F$1*B2

Result87500

  1. $F$1$250,000

    The value in F1.

  2. B235.0%

    The value in B2.

  3. $F$1*B287500

    The * operator multiplies.

In Google Sheets

The same formula works in Google Sheets: =$F$1*B2. We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.

Other ways to do it

Each one was run on the same example sheet.

FormulaResultWhen to use it
=ROUND($F$1*B2,0)$87,500, $62,500, $50,000…Rounds each amount to whole dollars. With awkward shares, see the pitfall on making the rounded amounts add up.

Common mistakes

  • Rounded amounts can be a dollar off the total. Make the last row take the remainder: =$F$1-SUM(C2:C5).
  • Check that the shares add up to 100% with =SUM(B2:B6); if they don't, divide by that sum: =$F$1*B2/SUM($B$2:$B$6).

Try it yourself

Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.

Split an amount by percentages

In C2, allocate the budget in F1 by the department's share, then fill down to C6.

Questions

How do I split by weights that aren't percentages, like headcount?

Divide each weight by the total weight: =$F$1*B2/SUM($B$2:$B$6).

How do I split a bill evenly?

Divide by the number of people: =F1/COUNTA(A2:A6).
