How to add text to the end of every cell in Excel

Formula (Excel and Google Sheets)

=A2&$E$1

Join the suffix after the value with &: =A2&$E$1, with the suffix (for example " cm") in E1.

Result on the example
one result per row in B2, filled down to B6
Works in
Excel 2019 and later, including Microsoft 365
Google Sheets
Same formula

See it work

The formula is already in B2, filled down to B6. Change any input and the result updates, or edit the formula to experiment.

How it works

& joins the value and the suffix in that order. The space is part of the suffix in E1, so the result reads "120 cm" rather than "120cm". $E$1 stays fixed as you fill down.

=A2&$E$1

Result"120 cm"

  1. A2120

    The value in A2.

  2. $E$1" cm"

    The value in E1.

  3. A2&$E$1"120 cm"

The & operator joins as text.

In Google Sheets

The same formula works in Google Sheets: =A2&$E$1. We ran it in Google Sheets mode on the same data and it returns the same results.

Other ways to do it

Each one was run on the same example sheet.

FormulaResultWhen to use it
=CONCAT(A2,$E$1)120 cm, 85.5 cm, 200 cm…The function form of &.

Common mistakes

  • The result is text, so SUM and averages ignore it. If you only want the unit on screen, keep the numbers and use a custom number format like 0.## "cm".
  • Number formatting is lost when you join: 1250 shows as "1250", not "1,250". Use TEXT(A2,"#,##0")&$E$1 to keep it.

Try it yourself

Same data, empty answer cell. Your formula is graded instantly, then re-checked on changed data, so a typed-in number won't pass.

Add text to the end of every cell

In B2, add the suffix in E1 to the end of the length, then fill down to B6.

Questions
