# How to calculate the number of working days in a month in Excel

Use NETWORKDAYS from the first to the last day of the month: `=NETWORKDAYS(EOMONTH(A2,-1)+1,EOMONTH(A2,0),holidays)`.

**Excel:** `=NETWORKDAYS(EOMONTH(A2,-1)+1,EOMONTH(A2,0),$D$2:$D$6)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Month | Working days | | Holidays |
| 2026-01-01 | | | 2026-01-01 |
| 2026-02-01 | | | 2026-01-19 |
| 2026-03-01 | | | 2026-02-16 |
| 2026-05-01 | | | 2026-05-25 |
| 2026-07-01 | | | 2026-07-03 |

Formula in B2, filled to B6: `=NETWORKDAYS(EOMONTH(A2,-1)+1,EOMONTH(A2,0),$D$2:$D$6)`

Result: 20; 19; 22; 20; 22

## How it works

`EOMONTH(A2,-1)+1` and `EOMONTH(A2,0)` are the first and last days of the month, whatever day A2 is. NETWORKDAYS counts the weekdays between them, both included, minus the holidays. January 2026 has 22 weekdays; less New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, that is 20.

## Other ways

- `=NETWORKDAYS(EOMONTH(A2,-1)+1,EOMONTH(A2,0))`: Weekdays only, with no holiday list. (Holidays count as working days.)

## Common mistakes

- With a mid-month date in A2, `NETWORKDAYS(A2,EOMONTH(A2,0))` counts only the rest of the month. Start from `EOMONTH(A2,-1)+1` for the whole month.
- A holiday on a weekend doesn't reduce the count. List the observed weekday instead, like July 3, 2026 for Independence Day.

## Questions

**How many working days are left in the month?**

Start from today: `=NETWORKDAYS(TODAY(),EOMONTH(TODAY(),0),$D$2:$D$6)`. It includes today if today is a working day.

**What if my weekend isn't Saturday and Sunday?**

Use NETWORKDAYS.INTL, which takes a weekend code, such as 7 for Friday and Saturday.
