# How to calculate win percentage in Excel

Count ties as half a win: `=(B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D2)`, with wins in B, losses in C and ties in D.

**Excel:** `=(B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D2)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Team | W | L | T | Win % |
| Hawks | 10 | 4 | 2 | |
| Rovers | 8 | 8 | 0 | |
| Lions | 12 | 3 | 1 | |
| Comets | 5 | 10 | 1 | |
| Bears | 9 | 6 | 1 | |

Formula in E2, filled to E6: `=(B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D2)`

Result: 0.688; 0.500; 0.781; 0.344; 0.594

## How it works

Win percentage is wins divided by games played. Ties are commonly counted as half a win and half a loss, so they add 0.5 each to the top and 1 to the bottom. The Hawks have 10 wins and 2 ties in 16 games: 11 / 16 = .688.

Sports tables usually show it as a decimal with three places, which the format does here.

## Other ways

- `=B2/(B2+C2)`: Ignores ties completely, as some leagues do. (Gives the Hawks .714.)
- `=B2/(B2+C2+D2)`: Counts ties as losses. (Gives the Hawks .625.)

## Common mistakes

- Leagues define ties differently. Check the rule before comparing your numbers with official standings.
- A team with no games divides by zero. Wrap it: `=IFERROR((B2+0.5*D2)/(B2+C2+D2),"")`.

## Questions

**How do I show it as a percentage instead of .688?**

Apply the Percent format: 68.8%.

**How do I rank teams by win percentage?**

Use `=RANK.EQ(E2,$E$2:$E$6)`, or sort the table with `=SORT(A2:E6,5,-1)`.
