# How to calculate a weighted score in Excel

Multiply each score by its weight and add: `=SUMPRODUCT(B2:E2,$B$8:$E$8)`, filled down for each option.

**Excel:** `=SUMPRODUCT(B2:E2,$B$8:$E$8)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E | F |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Vendor | Price | Quality | Delivery | Support | Weighted score |
| Atlas | 8 | 7 | 9 | 6 | |
| Brightline | 6 | 9 | 7 | 8 | |
| Corvex | 9 | 6 | 6 | 7 | |
| Dunmore | 7 | 8 | 8 | 9 | |
| Evergreen | 5 | 9 | 9 | 7 | |
| | | | | | |
| Weight | 0.35 | 0.3 | 0.2 | 0.15 | |

Formula in F2, filled to F6: `=SUMPRODUCT(B2:E2,$B$8:$E$8)`

Result: 7.60; 7.40; 7.20; 7.80; 7.30

## How it works

SUMPRODUCT multiplies the four scores in the row by the four weights and adds the results: for Atlas, 8×35% + 7×30% + 9×20% + 6×15% = 7.6. The weights are locked with `$`, so every vendor uses the same row 8 while the scores move down.

## Other ways

- `=B2*$B$8+C2*$C$8+D2*$D$8+E2*$E$8`: The same sum written out. Clear for a few criteria, tedious for many.

## Common mistakes

- Without `$` on the weights, filling down multiplies by row 9, 10… which are empty, and every score after the first is 0.
- If the weights don't add up to 100%, the scores are on a different scale. Divide by `SUM($B$8:$E$8)` to turn them into a weighted average.

## Questions

**How do I rank the vendors by score?**

Use `=RANK.EQ(F2,$F$2:$F$6)` next to each score.

**How do I find the best vendor?**

Use `=XLOOKUP(MAX(F2:F6),F2:F6,A2:A6)`.
