# How to calculate the number of weeks between two dates in Excel

Divide the days by 7 and drop the remainder: `=INT((C2-B2)/7)` returns the number of complete weeks.

**Excel:** `=INT((C2-B2)/7)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Project | Start | End | Weeks |
| Kitchen remodel | 2026-01-05 | 2026-03-02 | |
| Onboarding | 2026-02-09 | 2026-03-06 | |
| Marketing sprint | 2026-03-16 | 2026-04-24 | |
| Data migration | 2026-04-13 | 2026-07-31 | |
| Audit prep | 2026-05-04 | 2026-05-08 | |

Formula in D2, filled to D6: `=INT((C2-B2)/7)`

Result: 8; 3; 5; 15; 0

## How it works

Subtracting two dates gives the days between them, and dividing by 7 turns days into weeks. INT drops the leftover days, so only complete weeks count: Onboarding ran 25 days, which is 3 weeks and 4 days.

## Other ways

- `=(C2-B2)/7`: Decimal weeks, like 3.57. Format the column with one or two decimals. (Shows fractional weeks.)
- `=ROUNDUP((C2-B2)/7,0)`: Counts a part week as a full week, for billing by the week. (Partial weeks round up.)

## Common mistakes

- The result can pick up the date format and show as 1/8/1900. Format the column as a number.
- ROUND instead of INT turns 3 weeks and 4 days into 4 weeks. Use INT for completed weeks.
- If both the first and last day count, like a week-long event from Monday to Sunday, add 1 to the days first: `=INT((C2-B2+1)/7)`.

## Questions

**How do I show weeks and days, like "3 weeks, 4 days"?**

`=INT((C2-B2)/7)&" weeks, "&MOD(C2-B2,7)&" days"`.

**How do I count weeks from a date until today?**

Put `=TODAY()` in a cell, say F1, and use it as the end date: `=INT((F1-B2)/7)`.
