# How to calculate the time difference in minutes in Excel

Multiply the difference by the 1,440 minutes in a day: `=(C2-B2)*1440`.

**Excel:** `=(C2-B2)*1440` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Call | Start | End | Minutes |
| C-1101 | 0.3763888888888889 | 0.38680555555555557 | |
| C-1102 | 0.3958333333333333 | 0.425 | |
| C-1103 | 0.4479166666666667 | 0.45208333333333334 | |
| C-1104 | 0.4618055555555556 | 0.5138888888888888 | |
| C-1105 | 0.5819444444444445 | 0.5854166666666667 | |
| C-1106 | 0.6319444444444444 | 0.6576388888888889 | |

Formula in D2, filled to D7: `=(C2-B2)*1440`

Result: 15; 42; 6; 75; 5; 37

## How it works

A day has 1,440 minutes (24 × 60), and a time difference is a fraction of a day, so multiplying by 1440 converts it to minutes: 9:02 to 9:17 is 15 minutes.

## Other ways

- `=ROUND((C2-B2)*1440,0)`: Whole minutes. It also removes floating-point remainders, so 15 never shows as 14.9999999. (Rounds to whole minutes when the times include seconds.)
- `=(C2-B2)*86400`: Seconds instead of minutes. (Seconds.)

## Common mistakes

- Time arithmetic can give 14.9999999 instead of 15. Wrap it in ROUND before comparing or using INT.
- For calls that run past midnight, use `MOD(C2-B2,1)*1440`.

## Questions

**How do I get seconds?**

Multiply by 86,400: `=(C2-B2)*86400`.

**How do I total the minutes?**

`=SUM(D2:D7)`, or straight from the times: `=SUM(C2:C7-B2:B7)*1440`.
