# How to sum if a checkbox is checked in Excel

A checked box is TRUE, so use it as the condition: `=SUMIF(C2:C8,TRUE,B2:B8)`.

**Excel:** `=SUMIF(C2:C8,TRUE,B2:B8)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Expense | Amount | Reimbursed | | Reimbursed total |
| Hotel | 412 | true | | |
| Flight | 386 | false | | |
| Taxi | 48 | true | | |
| Meals | 126.5 | false | | |
| Parking | 36 | true | | |
| Conference fee | 299 | true | | |
| Train | 74 | false | | |

Formula in F1: `=SUMIF(C2:C8,TRUE,B2:B8)`

Result: $795.00

## How it works

Checkboxes in Excel 365 and Google Sheets store TRUE when checked and FALSE when not. SUMIF compares column C with TRUE and adds the amounts on the checked rows. Tick another box and the total updates.

## Other ways

- `=SUMPRODUCT(--C2:C8,B2:B8)`: Turns TRUE/FALSE into 1/0 and multiplies by the amounts.
- `=SUMIF(C2:C8,FALSE,B2:B8)`: The unchecked rows: what is still to be reimbursed. (Totals the unchecked expenses: 586.50.)

## Common mistakes

- `"TRUE"` in quotes is text and may not match the logical TRUE in every app. Use TRUE without quotes.
- Older form-control checkboxes don't store anything in the cell. Right-click > Format Control and set a linked cell, then sum on the linked cells.

## Questions

**How do I count the checked boxes?**

Use `=COUNTIF(C2:C8,TRUE)`.

**How do I add a checkbox in Google Sheets?**

Select the cells and choose Insert > Checkbox. The cells hold TRUE or FALSE, so the same SUMIF works.
