# How to round to the nearest quarter (0.25) in Excel

Use MROUND with 0.25: `=MROUND(B2,0.25)` turns 7.38 into 7.5 and 7.63 into 7.75.

**Excel:** `=MROUND(B2,0.25)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Employee | Hours worked | Billable hours |
| Ana | 7.38 | |
| Ben | 8.12 | |
| Cara | 6.9 | |
| Dev | 7.63 | |
| Eli | 9.87 | |

Formula in C2, filled to C6: `=MROUND(B2,0.25)`

Result: 7.50; 8.00; 7.00; 7.75; 9.75

## How it works

MROUND finds the nearest multiple of 0.25: 7.38 lies between 7.25 and 7.5 and is closer to 7.5; 8.12 is closer to 8.00. Billing in quarter hours, or pricing in quarters, uses the same formula.

## Other ways

- `=ROUND(B2*4,0)/4`: Four quarters in a unit: multiply by 4, round to a whole number, divide back. Works in every version and with negatives.

## Common mistakes

- Rounding to 2 decimals with `ROUND(B2,2)` doesn't give quarters; it keeps 7.38 as 7.38.
- If the hours are Excel times (7:23), they are fractions of a day. Round with `=MROUND(B2,"0:15")` instead.

## Questions

**How do I round to the nearest half?**

Use `=MROUND(B2,0.5)`, or `=ROUND(B2*2,0)/2`.

**How do I always round up to the next quarter hour?**

Use `=CEILING(B2,0.25)`.
