# How to get the end date of the quarter in Excel

Move forward by the months left in the quarter and take the month end: `=EOMONTH(A2,MOD(3-MONTH(A2),3))`.

**Excel:** `=EOMONTH(A2,MOD(3-MONTH(A2),3))` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B |
| --- | --- |
| Date | Quarter end |
| 2026-01-15 | |
| 2026-03-31 | |
| 2026-05-20 | |
| 2026-08-01 | |
| 2026-11-11 | |

Formula in B2, filled to B6: `=EOMONTH(A2,MOD(3-MONTH(A2),3))`

Result: 3/31/2026; 3/31/2026; 6/30/2026; 9/30/2026; 12/31/2026

## How it works

`MOD(3-MONTH(A2),3)` is the number of months left in the quarter: 2 in January, 0 in March, 1 in May. EOMONTH moves that many months ahead and returns the month end, which is the quarter end.

## Other ways

- `=DATE(YEAR(A2),ROUNDUP(MONTH(A2)/3,0)*3+1,0)`: Day 0 of the month after the quarter is the quarter's last day.

## Common mistakes

- For a fiscal year that starts in February, May or another month off the calendar quarters, use `=EOMONTH(A2,2-MOD(MONTH(A2)-start_month,3))`.
- Format the result as a date.

## Questions

**How do I get the first day of the quarter?**

`=DATE(YEAR(A2),ROUNDUP(MONTH(A2)/3,0)*3-2,1)`.

**How many days are left in the quarter?**

`=EOMONTH(A2,MOD(3-MONTH(A2),3))-A2`.
