# How to calculate pacing to a monthly goal in Excel

Compare progress with the share of the month gone: `=(C2/B2)/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0)))`. Above 100% means ahead of pace.

**Excel:** `=(C2/B2)/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0)))` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E | F | G |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rep | Monthly goal | Sales to date | Pacing | | As of | 2026-03-12 |
| Ana | 50000 | 21000 | | | | |
| Ben | 60000 | 18000 | | | | |
| Cara | 40000 | 15500 | | | | |
| Dev | 55000 | 24000 | | | | |
| Eli | 45000 | 12000 | | | | |

Formula in D2, filled to D6: `=(C2/B2)/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0)))`

Result: 108.5%; 77.5%; 100.1%; 112.7%; 68.9%

## How it works

On March 12, 12 of 31 days have passed: 38.7% of the month. `DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0))` gives the number of days in the month. Ana has 42% of her goal, so she is pacing at 42 / 38.7 = 108.5%: on track to beat it. Ben, at 77.5%, would finish short if nothing changes.

## Other ways

- `=C2/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0)))/B2`: Projects the month-end total first (sales ÷ share of month gone), then divides by the goal. Same result.

## Common mistakes

- Calendar days assume sales happen evenly every day. For a business that sells on weekdays only, use `NETWORKDAYS` for the elapsed and total days.
- Early in the month the pace swings wildly; a big order on day 2 can show 500%.

## Questions

**How do I project the month-end total?**

Divide sales to date by the share of the month gone: `=C2/(DAY($G$1)/DAY(EOMONTH($G$1,0)))`.

**How much does the rep need per remaining day?**

`=(B2-C2)/(EOMONTH($G$1,0)-$G$1)` gives the daily amount needed for the rest of the month.
