# How to get the date of the next Friday in Excel

Add the days to the next Friday: `=A2+7-MOD(WEEKDAY(A2)-6,7)`, with the weekday number (6 for Friday) in a cell if it changes.

**Excel:** `=A2+7-MOD(WEEKDAY(A2)-$E$1,7)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Order date | Ships on | | Weekday (6=Fri) | 6 |
| 2026-03-02 | | | | |
| 2026-03-05 | | | | |
| 2026-03-06 | | | | |
| 2026-03-07 | | | | |
| 2026-03-29 | | | | |
| 2026-12-31 | | | | |

Formula in B2, filled to B7: `=A2+7-MOD(WEEKDAY(A2)-$E$1,7)`

Result: 3/6/2026; 3/6/2026; 3/13/2026; 3/13/2026; 4/3/2026; 1/1/2027

## How it works

`MOD(WEEKDAY(A2)-$E$1,7)` is the number of days since the last Friday, 0 on a Friday. Seven minus that is the number of days to the next one, so a Friday moves a full week ahead and a Thursday moves one day.

## Other ways

- `=A2+MOD($E$1-WEEKDAY(A2),7)`: On or after: a Friday stays on the same day. (Fridays stay on the same date.)
- `=A2+8-WEEKDAY(A2+2)`: A short version that works for Friday only.

## Common mistakes

- WEEKDAY counts from Sunday = 1, so Friday is 6. With `WEEKDAY(A2,2)` (Monday = 1) Friday would be 5; don't mix the two numberings.
- Decide whether "next Friday" can be the same day. This formula never returns the order date itself; use the on-or-after version when it should.

## Questions

**How do I get the next Monday?**

Put 2 in E1. Any weekday works: 1 is Sunday and 7 is Saturday.

**How do I get the previous Friday?**

`=A2-MOD(WEEKDAY(A2)-$E$1-1,7)-1` returns the last Friday before A2.
