# How to list all birthdays in a given month in Excel

Filter on the month number: `=FILTER(A2:B11,MONTH(B2:B11)=E1,"No birthdays")`.

**Excel:** `=FILTER(A2:B11,MONTH(B2:B11)=E1,"No birthdays")` (Excel 2021, 2024 and Microsoft 365)

**Google Sheets:** `=FILTER(A2:B11,MONTH(B2:B11)=E1)`

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Name | Birthday | | Month (1-12) | 11 |
| Grace | 1990-11-03 | | Birthdays | |
| Omar | 1984-10-29 | | | |
| Lena | 2001-01-15 | | | |
| Theo | 1993-11-21 | | | |
| Raj | 1978-10-12 | | | |
| Nina | 1988-11-09 | | | |
| Kofi | 1999-06-30 | | | |
| Ivy | 1996-02-29 | | | |
| Paul | 1975-12-02 | | | |
| Zoe | 2004-11-30 | | | |

Formula in D3: `=FILTER(A2:B11,MONTH(B2:B11)=E1,"No birthdays")`

Result (spills 4 × 2): Grace, 11/3/1990; Theo, 11/21/1993; Nina, 11/9/1988; Zoe, 11/30/2004

## How it works

`MONTH(B2:B11)` returns the month of every birthday at once, and FILTER keeps the rows where it equals the month in E1. The third argument is what to show when nobody has a birthday that month.

## Other ways

- `=SORTBY(FILTER(A2:B11,MONTH(B2:B11)=E1),DAY(FILTER(B2:B11,MONTH(B2:B11)=E1)),1)`: Also sorts the list by day of the month. (Sorted by day: Grace, Nina, Theo, Zoe.)

## Common mistakes

- Google Sheets FILTER has no "if empty" argument; wrap it in IFERROR instead: `=IFERROR(FILTER(A2:B11,MONTH(B2:B11)=E1),"No birthdays")`.
- Blank birthday cells count as month 1 and show up in January. Add a test: `(MONTH(B2:B11)=E1)*(B2:B11<>"")`.

## Questions

**How do I list this month's birthdays automatically?**

Use `MONTH(TODAY())` in place of E1.

**How do I list the birthdays in the next 30 days?**

Calculate the days until each next birthday in a helper column and filter on it.
