# How to calculate the fiscal year from a date in Excel

Add 1 to the calendar year from the start month on: `=YEAR(A2)+(MONTH(A2)>=$E$1)`, with the start month in E1.

**Excel:** `=YEAR(A2)+(MONTH(A2)>=$E$1)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Date | Fiscal year |  | FY starts in month | 7 |
| 2026-06-30 |  |  |  |  |
| 2026-07-01 |  |  |  |  |
| 2026-12-15 |  |  |  |  |
| 2027-03-03 |  |  |  |  |
| 2025-08-20 |  |  |  |  |
| 2027-07-15 |  |  |  |  |

Formula in B2, filled to B7: `=YEAR(A2)+(MONTH(A2)>=$E$1)`

Result: 2026; 2027; 2027; 2027; 2026; 2028

## How it works

`MONTH(A2)>=$E$1` is TRUE, which counts as 1, from July onward, so those dates belong to the fiscal year that ends next calendar year. January to June add 0 and keep the calendar year: June 30, 2026 is in fiscal 2026 and July 1, 2026 in fiscal 2027.

## Other ways

- `="FY"&(YEAR(A2)+(MONTH(A2)>=$E$1))`: A label like FY2027. (Text label.)
- `=YEAR(EDATE(A2,13-$E$1))`: Moves the date forward so the fiscal year end lands in December, then takes the year.

## Common mistakes

- Some organizations name the fiscal year by the year it starts in. Then use `=YEAR(A2)-(MONTH(A2)<$E$1)`.
- This assumes the fiscal year doesn't start in January: with 1 in E1 it adds a year to every date. For a calendar year, use YEAR(A2).

## Questions

**How do I get the start date of the fiscal year?**

`=DATE(YEAR(A2)-(MONTH(A2)<$E$1),$E$1,1)`.

**How do I get the fiscal quarter?**

`="Q"&INT(MOD(MONTH(A2)-$E$1,12)/3)+1`.
