# How to calculate the date someone turns a certain age in Excel

Move the birth date forward 12 months per year: `=EDATE(B2,12*$F$1)`, with the age in F1.

**Excel:** `=EDATE(B2,12*$F$1)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E | F |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Name | Date of birth | Turns 65 on | | Age | 65 |
| Martha | 1961-03-14 | | | | |
| George | 1962-11-02 | | | | |
| Linda | 1960-02-29 | | | | |
| Frank | 1963-07-31 | | | | |
| Susan | 1959-12-01 | | | | |

Formula in C2, filled to C6: `=EDATE(B2,12*$F$1)`

Result: 3/14/2026; 11/2/2027; 2/28/2025; 7/31/2028; 12/1/2024

## How it works

EDATE moves the birth date forward 12 months for every year, landing on the birthday of that age. A February 29 birthday lands on February 28 in a common year, so Linda turns 65 on February 28, 2025.

## Other ways

- `=DATE(YEAR(B2)+$F$1,MONTH(B2),DAY(B2))`: Adds the years to the year part. A February 29 birthday rolls to March 1. (Linda turns 65 on March 1, 2025.)

## Common mistakes

- Adding 65*365 days falls short by the leap days in between, about 16 days.
- Some benefit rules treat you as reaching an age the day before your birthday, as US Social Security does. Subtract 1 if yours does.

## Questions

**How do I get the first of the month of that birthday?**

`=EOMONTH(EDATE(B2,12*$F$1),-1)+1`.

**How old is someone on a given date?**

`=DATEDIF(B2,date,"y")`.
