# How to convert time to decimal hours in Excel

Multiply the time by 24: `=B2*24` turns 7:45 into 7.75 hours.

**Excel:** `=B2*24` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Employee | Time worked | Decimal hours |
| Ana | 0.3229166666666667 | |
| Ben | 0.3472222222222222 | |
| Cara | 0.25416666666666665 | |
| Dev | 0.3958333333333333 | |
| Eli | 0.17708333333333334 | |

Formula in C2, filled to C6: `=B2*24`

Result: 7.75; 8.33; 6.10; 9.50; 4.25

## How it works

A time is a fraction of a day and a day has 24 hours, so multiplying by 24 gives decimal hours: 7:45 is 0.3229 of a day, which is 7.75 hours. Payroll and billing usually need hours in this form.

## Other ways

- `=ROUND(B2*24,2)`: Rounded to two decimals for payroll. (8:20 becomes 8.33.)
- `=B2*1440/60`: Converts to minutes and then to hours; the same result.

## Common mistakes

- The result may inherit the time format and show as 18:00. Format the cell as a number.
- Times stored as text need converting first: `=TIMEVALUE(B2)*24`.

## Questions

**How do I convert to minutes instead?**

Multiply by 1440: `=B2*1440`.

**How do I pay the hours at a rate?**

`=B2*24*rate`.
