# How to convert minutes to hours and minutes in Excel

Divide by 1,440, the minutes in a day, and format as h:mm: `=B2/1440` turns 135 into 2:15.

**Excel:** `=B2/1440` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Activity | Minutes | h:mm |
| Workshop | 135 | |
| Commute | 90 | |
| Review | 45 | |
| Flight | 210 | |
| Lab | 77 | |

Formula in C2, filled to C6: `=B2/1440`

Result: 2:15; 1:30; 0:45; 3:30; 1:17

## How it works

A day has 1,440 minutes, so dividing by 1440 turns minutes into a fraction of a day. With the h:mm format, 135 minutes shows as 2:15.

## Other ways

- `=INT(B2/60)&":"&TEXT(MOD(B2,60),"00")`: Text from whole hours and leftover minutes; it keeps counting past 24 hours. (Text.)
- `=INT(B2/60)&" h "&MOD(B2,60)&" min"`: A label like 2 h 15 min. (Text label.)

## Common mistakes

- The h:mm format wraps at 24 hours: 1,500 minutes shows as 1:00. Use the custom format [h]:mm, or the INT and MOD text version.
- Minutes stored as text need converting first, with VALUE or `--B2`.
