# How to convert decimal hours to hours and minutes in Excel

Divide by 24 and format the cell as h:mm: `=B2/24` turns 7.75 into 7:45.

**Excel:** `=B2/24` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Task | Hours (decimal) | Time (h:mm) |
| Site visit | 7.75 | |
| Training | 1.5 | |
| Standup | 0.25 | |
| Inventory | 8.2 | |
| Install | 11.5 | |

Formula in C2, filled to C6: `=B2/24`

Result: 7:45; 1:30; 0:15; 8:12; 11:30

## How it works

Spreadsheet times are fractions of a day, so dividing hours by 24 turns 7.75 hours into 0.3229 of a day. With the h:mm number format, that shows as 7:45. The 0.2 hour in 8.2 is 12 minutes.

## Other ways

- `=TEXT(B2/24,"h:mm")`: Text like 7:45, for labels. (Text.)
- `=INT(B2)&":"&TEXT(MOD(B2,1)*60,"00")`: Builds the text from whole hours and minutes, and keeps counting past 24 hours. (Text.)

## Common mistakes

- Without a time format the result shows as 0.3229. Format the cells as `h:mm`.
- With h:mm, totals of 24 hours or more wrap around. Use the custom format `[h]:mm` for durations that can pass 24 hours.
