# How to split an amount by percentages in Excel

Multiply the locked total by each row's percentage: `=$F$1*B2`, filled down.

**Excel:** `=$F$1*B2` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E | F |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Department | Share | Amount | | Budget | 250000 |
| Sales | 0.35 | | | | |
| Engineering | 0.25 | | | | |
| Marketing | 0.2 | | | | |
| Operations | 0.125 | | | | |
| HR | 0.075 | | | | |

Formula in C2, filled to C6: `=$F$1*B2`

Result: $87,500; $62,500; $50,000; $31,250; $18,750

## How it works

Each department gets its share of the total: 35% of 250,000 is 87,500. The budget cell is locked with $ so every row multiplies the same total. When the shares add up to 100%, the amounts add up to the budget.

## Other ways

- `=ROUND($F$1*B2,0)`: Rounds each amount to whole dollars. With awkward shares, see the pitfall on making the rounded amounts add up.

## Common mistakes

- Rounded amounts can be a dollar off the total. Make the last row take the remainder: `=$F$1-SUM(C2:C5)`.
- Check that the shares add up to 100% with `=SUM(B2:B6)`; if they don't, divide by that sum: `=$F$1*B2/SUM($B$2:$B$6)`.

## Questions

**How do I split by weights that aren't percentages, like headcount?**

Divide each weight by the total weight: `=$F$1*B2/SUM($B$2:$B$6)`.

**How do I split a bill evenly?**

Divide by the number of people: `=F1/COUNTA(A2:A6)`.
