# How to add text to the end of every cell in Excel

Join the suffix after the value with &: =A2&$E$1, with the suffix (for example " cm") in E1.

**Excel:** `=A2&$E$1` (Excel 2019 and later, including Microsoft 365)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D | E |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Length | With unit | | Suffix | cm |
| 120 | | | | |
| 85.5 | | | | |
| 200 | | | | |
| 64 | | | | |
| 150.25 | | | | |

Formula in B2, filled to B6: `=A2&$E$1`

Result: 120 cm; 85.5 cm; 200 cm; 64 cm; 150.25 cm

## How it works

`&` joins the value and the suffix in that order. The space is part of the suffix in E1, so the result reads "120 cm" rather than "120cm". `$E$1` stays fixed as you fill down.

## Other ways

- `=CONCAT(A2,$E$1)`: The function form of &.

## Common mistakes

- The result is text, so SUM and averages ignore it. If you only want the unit on screen, keep the numbers and use a custom number format like `0.## "cm"`.
- Number formatting is lost when you join: 1250 shows as "1250", not "1,250". Use `TEXT(A2,"#,##0")&$E$1` to keep it.

## Questions

**How do I add a comma to the end of each cell?**

Join it on: `=A2&","`.

**How do I add text to both ends?**

Join on both sides: `="("&A2&")"`.
