# How to add months to a month-end date and stay at the end of the month in Excel

Use `=EOMONTH(A2,B2)`. It adds the months and always returns the last day of the resulting month.

**Excel:** `=EOMONTH(A2,B2)` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Period end | Months | Next period end |
| 2026-02-28 | 1 | |
| 2026-04-30 | 2 | |
| 2026-06-30 | 3 | |
| 2026-09-30 | 1 | |
| 2026-11-30 | 3 | |

Formula in C2, filled to C6: `=EOMONTH(A2,B2)`

Result: 3/31/2026; 6/30/2026; 9/30/2026; 10/31/2026; 2/28/2027

## How it works

EOMONTH adds the months and always returns the last day of the resulting month, so a schedule of month ends stays on month ends. EDATE keeps the day number instead, which turns February 28 into March 28 and September 30 into October 30.

## Other ways

- `=EDATE(A2,B2)`: Keeps the day number, so month ends drift. (February 28 plus one month is March 28.)

## Common mistakes

- A series built with EDATE from a short month gets stuck on the 28th for the rest of the series.
- If the start isn't a month end, EOMONTH still jumps to one: April 15 plus 2 months becomes June 30.

## Questions

**How do I list the next 12 month ends?**

`=EOMONTH(A2,SEQUENCE(12))`.

**How do I check that a date is a month end?**

`=A2=EOMONTH(A2,0)`.
