# How to add minutes to a time in Excel

Divide the minutes by 1,440 and add them: `=B2+C2/1440`.

**Excel:** `=B2+C2/1440` (Every current version)

**Google Sheets:** the same formula works.

## Example

Sample data (row 1 is the header):

| A | B | C | D |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Appointment | Start | Length (min) | Ends |
| Consult | 0.375 | 45 | |
| Workshop | 0.4375 | 90 | |
| Follow-up | 0.5520833333333334 | 20 | |
| Fitting | 0.6597222222222222 | 25 | |
| Review | 0.6944444444444444 | 30 | |

Formula in D2, filled to D6: `=B2+C2/1440`

Result: 9:45 AM; 12:00 PM; 1:35 PM; 4:15 PM; 5:10 PM

## How it works

A day has 1,440 minutes, so `C2/1440` is the length as a fraction of a day. Adding it to the start time gives the end time: 10:30 AM plus 90 minutes is 12:00 PM.

## Other ways

- `=B2+C2/24/60`: The same, dividing by 24 and then 60.
- `=MOD(B2+C2/1440,1)`: Keeps a pure time of day when the end passes midnight. (Drops the day after midnight.)

## Common mistakes

- `=B2+C2` adds C2 days, not minutes.
- Past midnight the result is more than 1, a time on the next day. Format it as h:mm to show the clock time, or use MOD(…,1).

## Questions

**How do I subtract minutes?**

`=B2-C2/1440`.

**How do I add hours and minutes together?**

Add both fractions: `=B2+hours/24+minutes/1440`.
